ImaginaryF – Haha! What’s up ‘...’, Long time! *smiles*
Efah– Hehe, it’s good to see you again Kamina! Why are you here?
ImaginaryF – Well ‘...’ I’m here because I have missed you, it’s been years we were always so close, let’s go and create fun like we used to. (Chuckles with hand over mouth)
Seizing Control
MONOLOGUE – It didn’t take her long to Succumb to the temptations of darkness, a girl who was once pure, began to be tainted by an evil entity her own mind created. Slowly her bad deeds grew worse and worse. Until even those closest to her, who comforted her in times of need began to be hurt by Kamina’s influence.
ImaginaryF – Is there something wrong ‘...’?
Efah – I still kind of miss him
ImaginaryF – (Glares like he is threatened)
Epiphany
MCFriend – What the hell was that stuff you were pulling against Ramona!? Yeah she’s our nemesis but that’s going too far ‘...’!
Efah – Hmph! She deserved every bit of it, she’s lucky I didn’t kick her ass! Ain’t that right Kamina!?
ImaginaryF - ^_^ (Smiles)
MCFriend – Heh! You’re crazy! Your imaginary friend isn’t real! Your mind just fabricated him after your boyfriend left you!
Efah – Kamina is not imaginary!
*Efah slams MCfriend’s head against wall*
*Efah crying after realising mistakes*
Truth Emerges
*Rhys pacing outside changing rooms*
*Efah walks through door*
Rhys – Hey, your hair looks nice today *smiles*
Efah - What do you want? (Hostile mood)
Rhys – Look, I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you she was my ex, because I didn’t think it was that important.
Efah – you loved her more than me!
Rhys – I didn’t, I don’t Efah, *sighs* im in love with you!
*MChar makes a face as if she’s considering this to be the truth*
The main charater, is going to be named 'Efah', because its meaning is "darkness" or "gloomy". This will also suit not only the charaters actions of brutal murder, but will also will suit her mood, because of the minipulartion and trauma of breaking up with her lover, her mood becomes gloomy and quite depressed.
The imaginary friend, is going to be named '
The boyfriend, is going to be named 'Rhys' because its meaning is "heat of passion". This is perfect because, 'Efah' is so in love with him, but kills him in a momented of twisted passion, so he literally dies in the 'heat of passion'.
We are going to apply this dark, Gothic feel to our charater. Using costume avalible to us, the charater is going to wear a pair of blackDoctor martens.
As a group we are studying'Donnie Darko' as a huge inspiration for our film, this also includes the costume. From his atire we denote, that his character has quite a dark, Gothic side to him, he is sporting a grey hoodie which signifies his age as being a teenager, because it juxtaposes his party costume it suggests that he may have a more pore and innocent side to him. This use of colour in his clothing is also used in another scene, featuring a white tee-shirt and a black hoodie.
To write the narrative of the short film we are going to produce, a very Strong theme comes to mind to create an eerie ambiance, by writing and narrating a poem or story similar to the works of Edgar Allen Poe.
A 'The Simpsons' has been a personal favourite of mine, which we would modernise further. By costume and lauguage, but this is the kind of clever, subtle cleaver ambiance is one which we would like to achieve.
The language will not be used as such, but the tone of voice and the pace, at which he tells the story, will be taken in to great consideration when writing, and preforming the script.
I believe that 'the ugly duckling' is a perfect name for our film, but this is my new take on it. Its a typical concept however its quick to tell the story and will be effective.
The girl is an outcast, no one in her school thinks shes pretty, shes into her work not fashion. Her friend/ a boy gives her a make over, remove the glasses and outdated clothing. They put her in a dress, do her hair makeup and suddenly she gets attention from everyone, everyone in the common room is shocked by her outstanding new apperance and the girls who used to bully her, are now jelouse of the girl who got no attention, because she stole the attention of the boys they fancy.
This idea is simmilar to Robert Iscove 'Shes All That'
Another idea we have for a 5 minute short film, is a remake of the ugly duckling. It was quite hard to come up with a new concept so we decided to look at cautionary tales. One which came to mind instantly was 'The Ugly Duckling'.
Like myself, Quentin Tarantino has appeared in his movies, much like him i would like to feature at some point in our new one. This gives me a chance to, write the film, direct it, feature in it and also edit. This gives me all angles of experience i could possibly gain from a level media. Until the day i die, I will always own footage of me, in my prime years doing something i fully enjoy. This could also be the reason for Tarantinos appearance in Pulp Fiction, this also gives a face to the name of the director, which the audience will enjoy to watch.
Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, is perfect to study, when gaining ideas on how to film a modern love story. In particular this clip is perfect, the way in which the moment, their lips touch for the first time, is captured takes my breath away, This is the kind of emotion we want to capture as film directors, in our short movie. The attraction is so strong, and the romance and excitement bursts through the screen.
Another reason to why this clip is vital to study, is because until he end of the scene, nobody actually sees romeo, they only see Juliet. Romeo at this point doesn't exist to the rest of the world, he is only visual and only exits in Juliet's eyes at this point. This is similar to what we want to portray in our film.
One other key point, about romeo and Juliet which links to our story line is, Juliet is in love, however they can't be together for a reason, which means eventually they have to let go, although they don't let go and are with each other for the rest of eternity, the idea is still very much there.
Ate de Jong's, Drop Dead Fred is a child's film, about a grown up woman, who still see's her childhood imaginary friend. Fred tries to ruin her life in some ways, and wants her to return to her fun inner child, however has to let go eventually to have a successful adulthood. This film could be helpful, although its a comedy, which is completely opposite to our style, we could learn a bit about how to portray an imaginary friend, through film.
By watching this as a group, we will be able to take notes on successful camera movements, editing, and so on. This film is perfect for initial research.
I'm going to keep this speech tot he point, much like the film I'm proposing ,simplicity is key. We should learn how to walk before we try and run. We have been given an opportunity to make a short film, if we stick with a simple idea and make it successful, in the future we can take what we learn and excel our selves. This idea should be chosen because, its relevant to our lives as teenage students from he city. We already have a strong connection to the story line because the majority of us here have, experienced the story. Also such factors as set, location, characters, and costume are at our disposal, we should always take full advantage of what is around us.
We are also familiar with music which will add to the style of film, because we all listen to the radio, we are exposed to material that will push our film further, every single day.
This famous clip comes from (director) 's Annie Hall, preformed by Woody Allen. This is extremely successful because it sets the whole film up, it introduces a few characters, it sets the tone of the film. From this monologue we now know who the main character is, his personality, what he thinks about, current affairs in his life and so on. It works perfectly also because, what he is saying could easily get boring, however Allen's performance keeps the audiences attention through out, the energy level is persistant which is what we aim to achieve. The way in which this scene is shot also signifies many things to the audience, the predominant colour is brown, which suggests he is an average normal day guy, with a normal job, a normal life, however his shirt is brown and red, which may indicate that his life has an heir of danger, or lust and something out of the ordinary, much like the brown against the reds, is about to occur.
tHese are just thoughts of what we may use in our film, which will relate to the sotry line, because of the genre the charater may listen to, or may be exposed to.
This song may be perfect, because sh sings about being awake for "24 hours" and she knows she should be asleep, and her life can amount ot more, but the temptaion is too strong. Which is exactly what ours film is about.
Adele hometown glory is also another song we may ad tot he non-iagetic sounds to our film for a number of reasons.
Fistly, is the respnose to the lyrics. The title is called Hometown glory, which is perfect for our story line. Its set in London Town, and we hope to incluse int he mise en scene, the london sky line and props such as big red london busses. Also that the girl thinks her life is in its glory days, how ever it is far from. Scondly the tempo changes in the song, it starts off slow and melow, and quite romantic. My vision is the girl with her boyfriend about to consume dangerous substances, the beat drops as they get intoxicated.
So these are a few clips i found on youtube, of people doing smoke tricks. Luckily enough, I used to be a smoker. Therefore I am quite decent at doing smoke tricks, nothings as professional as these, however sometimes I can preform an "Irish water fall", and I am very good at doing hoops. This will come in handy when we act out smoking cigarettes or smoking weed. This will make the character more realistic, and will add to the role.
Irvine Welsh will personally always be a huge inspiration, his books are so amazing in my eyes. Coming from a Scottish background, and living with very Scottish people, I read his books, and give the characters a face from my family. This is why I particularly enjoy his books, my family give it a depth. Because we are doing a drug related film, and a planing to use a voice over, the famous passage is brilliant to at least look at, or even study to help our film progress.

Anyone into film, or books will have heard this famous monologue, preformed by Ewen Mc Gregor, a famous Scottish actor, featured in Danny Boyle's 'Trainspotting'. The famous "choose life" passage from this famous punk book which reads-
Nick's idea: short film about a day in a life of a teenage londoner, 24 hours of situations. School life.Home life.love life.
It could start of a the day being brilliant and avarage then through out the day, it gets worse and worse. Much like a short story, from one of my fav writers, which has also been put into a film. IrvinE Welsh's 'The Acid house'.
One of the short, twisted, genius story's include Granton star cause, which popped into my mind, the moment Nick pitched his idea. The way in which this short story is composed, is clever, and if we use Nicks idea, then to take note of this story would be wise. The book had also been turned into a film by Paul McGuigan Which includes 'The granton star cause' Followed by 'A soft touch' then lastly 'The acid house'. The film also featurs some of the Trainspottings cast, which i brought shortly after reading the book. The film unfortunately comes nowhere near the book, or Danny Boyle's 'Trainspotting' however is still done well, and portrays a twisted version of Welsh's sthoughts and disturbed ideas!
This is a just thought of what we may use in our film, which will relate to the sotry line, because of the genre the charater may listen to, or may be exposed to.
This song may be perfect, because she sings about being awake for "24 hours" and she knows she should be asleep, and her life can amount to more, however the temptaion is too strong. Which is exactly what ours film is about.
(just notes, nothing official) Naturally in the cast we must have a boy and a girl, because our concept is of how different world collide and clash. Th girl character (the lead role) starts off life with A grades, then as each factor gets introduced, she starts going down hill, she meets a boy, then we see a C in her paper, the boy her introduces her to vodka, she starts to look rougher and her grades go down and down. Then he introduces her to drugs then they get worse, and int he end, she can't take any more and she kills her self. Dramatic ending but changeable, its just a thought :)...here a clip that might be helpful for when she gets her failed paper back.
she screws it up and trows it, goes for a spliff/ drink (whatever), she splits with her boyfriend, her parents are going crazy, she can't take anymore!
So, as of today it became official! Our group over the next academic year are going to strive towards making a successful short film. Ideas and creative juices are already over flowing, In a brief chat about life Nicolas and I discribed our lives as a pro-gression of regression. This was a clever off the tongue description of what happened in school, our lives were totally (almost) perfect until certain factors were socially introduced. These include, boys/ girls into our pretty separate world we integrated, then with this came the social gathering, in clubs houses or even in a park on a sunny day. Soon after came such things as alcohol and perhaps even drugs in a brief encounter, which was the progression of our social lives, which led to the regression of our academic lives. This simple concept which (almost) every person can relate to, is now the basis of a short film. This idea is perfect because it will be easy to cast, and easy to write because we have all been through it. An audience will already be intrigued because they may relate to some of the characters. I am interested to how this random conversation, may lead to a successful A2 piece.
This website is a good foundation of what a film website should have, firstly a summery of the plot. Secondly it features the movie trailer, which will be part of our coursework, so we shall put it on our website.
Quite importantly it also has various paragraphs on the cast and crew, which the audience will be interested to read about, to get some background knowledge on the film.
Director- Nick Love
If viewers access the website before the release of the film, they will be delighted to find a slide show on different scenes of the film. This also works as a trailer in a slight way, because it gives the audience a little taster on what they might expect, and leave them wanting more.
[INSERT PHOTO]
This also introduces images which breaks up the text, which could put the website viewers off, because too much ready is often boring. If the website has different media then it will be more fun and interactive for the audience.
Also included is contact details, this is helpful because if they have any inquires they know how to deal with it. Also other relevant links are included, on our website this could include, either work we have done, including our As project, anything we work from at home, or any other students that have projects relevant to ours. Which is quite similar to the links below, our website could link to our production company with news and information about any future projects.
After discussing options with the rest of the group, i think question two might be the project we take on for A2.
2. A promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with two of the following three options:
a website homepage for the film;
a film magazine front cover, featuring the film;
a poster for the film.
Already our group have begun to discuss what we might do, and researched well known film trailers for inspiration.
From this clip, we instantly connote the use of fades to black. The trailer is fast pace, to keep the audience interested in the action on the screen. Another common trick used in movie trailers is to include , every exiting moment in the film, to attract views. This often leaves the audience angry, if the rest of the film isn't as good, however will increase the profit, its one of the tricks of the trade. The trailer will introduce every main character, featuring attractive characters, because 'sex sells'. If the audience has an instant attraction to a character, this will increase the chance of them actually going to watch/to buy the film.
The trailer will begin at a slow pace, then the shots become quicker and tighter and full of action, to come to a climax. At this point it will leave the audience exited, and the trailer i will come to an end, leaving them wanting more.
As media is officially over, the exam and course work is officially complete! My predicted grade is a B which I am happy about, so now in A2 I'm going to strive towards an A! Each possible task was given to us today, the one which stuck out most in my mind, and appealed to my creative side was the T.V documentary, or a soap trailer. The T.V documentary because it sounds exiting and the trailer because one of my close friends had done this as her As media project, and it was quite successful, she also got an A in her coursework.

Here are some examples of a range of trailers, which can give us ideas and start to train our brains how trailers work, another reason why trailers are convenient is because we live in a world where we can't escape advertising.
every shot featured in this trailer, you will notice are close ups. This is so the short clip can introduce each character quickly, close ups are necessary because the audience have to get a feel of which characters they might be watching in future. Most characters will have sex appeal, because as they say in the industry "sex sells", if the audience has an instant attraction to a character, weather it be obvious, or sub conscience; the likely hood of them tuning in will be high.
Within this short clip we already know the the names of the main characters, and this is from the use of text, alongside a interesting shot of the character.
There are a series of quick cuts, the trailer has to be fast pace to keep the audience interested. The non-diagetic music as to be related to the contents of the soap, a piano piece is featured in this clip, which compliments the horror, Gothic fantasy theme which is obvious through the use of set design, characters, music, dialogue and action.
In our film we represent the social group of young white females. We portrayed our character as pure and vulnerable by dressing her in a cardigan and white trainers. White signifies purity and that she may be a virgin which adds to the eeriness , that the attack may be one of sexual motives.
High angle shots, signify to the audience that the person featured in the shot is the victim, and that someone may be looking down on them which makes them the lesser power.
Focusing on the social group of teenagers, she is shown talking to a male via text, which brings up two points we have made. Teenagers at this age commonly blossom relationships at this particular stage in their lives, and believe there in love (puppy love) which always quickly comes to a tragic end. However this end ins extremely more tragic then usual.
Another point is the use of technology, a Mobile phone, and young adolescents use text messages to communicate rather then phone calls. This is because we live in the computer generation they don't make much real contact they communicate through phone or computer screens.
We challenge ideology's by crossing classic with modern film, which creates a new and exiting take on films we had researched.
Our film simultaneously develops and challenges similar media product. A number of conventions were used to create a film which is a sci-fi and horror. which its self challenges classic ideology's. A convention which sticks to classic horror. is the location of a school which is also featured in recent horrors such as, Wes Cravens, 'Scream'. Also the school in particular, which happens to be hundreds of years old which worked massively in our favour. Features of the school are quite Gothic, which you would imagine are quite similar to buildings, in ligature of the classic horror genre. Much like Edgar Allen Poe's, The Masque of the Red Death. Although our school is not as picturesque, similar themes are feature in out mise en scene.
The use of another convention of the classic genre, in nearly every classic black and white horror film features a damsel in distress who is stalked and prayed on by a male villain. She is always beautiful on a scene, pure and helpless. A film which features is the Tod Browning 1931 'Dracular'. [INSERT PIC] The idea that the attack could be of a sexual nature is not obvious in our film, however leaves room for the possibility.
Another convention similar to the horror genre is the classic story line, we created nothing out of the ordinary to avoid confusion. In films such as Stanley Kubrick's, 'The shining' (Stanley Kubrick was a huge influence in the making of our film) the story line basically is- the male villain prays on te female damsel, and a huge amount of suspense is created by the music and certain shots, for example the corridor scene shot on an uneasy angle, which is featured in out film.
We also challenge conventions quite bravely by producing a classic horror/ modern sci-fi. Instead of sticking to black and white which was the original plan, we made a brave decision to use colour grading, which gave a huge amount of unease to the film which was the intentions. It's so close to reality however not quite the same, which makes it eerie. This decision was the beginning of the sci-fi genre with a classic horror undertone.
The non-diagetic music which creates suspense and a pace tot he film, challenges all sci-fi films. This music is not featured in such films because most films would not mix genres to avoid a possible clash. The music from our film was an influence from typical classic horrors.
Another factor which challenges conventions of real media products is the villain, by watching our film some may question why there is an un-human villain in a school. This breaks every stereotypical sci-fi or classic horror. For example James Cameron's 'The Terminator' . Which was a huge influence on our editing, the robot-being isn't featured in a school, he would have no place in this environment, its predominantly set in the slums of America, which is far from a secondary school in Britain which is where our film is set.
In order improve our mark, we had to come up with new exiting ideas to push our project forward. There fore we brainstormed and filmed new "artsy" shots to be featured in our film. Holding a shot steady, where appropriate
Firstly, a tracking shot using a dolly, of the monster of the film dragging his victim down the school corridor. This shot is hard to do and with the use of a dolly we should be able to pull it off to create a variety of shit, and interesting camera movement.
To establish that the school is empty, a number of long shots (once the character had been introduced) Will be at an angle, when edited will be part of a series of jump shots to move time on in the two minutes we are given without ruining the continuity. Together both shots will be at different angles to put the audience more on edge, because when using these shots, subconsciously we are on edge because something isn't right, and the brain will process this, and you will feel the emotion we are trying to create.
(people walking out of school, find out term)
Framing shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate / (shooting material appropriate to the task set)
The close up of the text message on the phone, is now an extereme close up, to further exclude any unnecessary elements, which also reveals the time of which the message was sent (3.08, just after school), which will further sell the fact that this is set after school once we edit in the new long shot scene of the school gates closing and all pupils leaving.
Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate / (shooting material appropriate to the task set)
There was not enough variety shown in our fist draft, a vital shot missing from the piece, which is typically seen in the opening scene of a feature film is a long shot, this establishes the setting, and what we may expect, with distance, to start out journey into the film.
This music was found to replace Beethoven's-love story, its fits in well with the mood we are trying to create, one of enigma and fear. This piece of music is featured during the title sequence all the way up to the moment where the hand is famed in the shot, when water drops from something unknown, where the sound will then change to create a new effect and suspense.
Diagetic sound will also feature, when the shot fades black, and a deathly scream will be heard, the screen is left black to leave the violence and drama up to the audience, which is usually more gruesome than any thing a director can portray on screen. This idea comes from a famous scene in the classic film [Insert film and director], where the door is left ajar, and the male character attacks the female, and all that can be seen is the shadow of his hand and screams from the woman, which sends chills up and down your spine as you imagine what he is doing to her! The imagination is more powerful than any moving picture on a screen.
The underlining theme of our feature film is classic ideology's, which is the base of any horror film which is, love, passion and perhaps social outcast, which will result in the monster becoming obsessed with erotic killings. this is what we wanted to achieve but with subtlety. So the Non-diagetic music is essential to us, which we have had numerous discussions and a contrast of ideas had arises, we had decided to use 'love story' which was a brilliant idea, however imperfect, the song is to upbeat, which could have cause a juxtaposition between the theme and music, however because the story is not clear yet because we only see the set up, even though usually in drama this concept works, something is notright. However I do believe that a classical piece would be most perfect, however less upbeat the a more sad and deeper meaning.
So, initially we were all completely in love with Stanley Kubrick's cheap however, effective title sequences, which produced a raw emotion of fear from his striking idea. Red as we thought, and many would, would be the perfect colour for the font, in the art world this powerful colour represents love, passion and death, all of which are themes of our The video of our first draft, (below)contains our initial idea, which gave the look we were looking for, however red titles against a black and white film, now we know was quite a ridiculous idea, it makes no scene what so ever, but "love is blind" and Stanley Kubrick had broken out hearts.
After realising our mistake, it was back to the drawing board to find a solution to our dilemma, which was simple giving our basic knowledge o classic horror's and black and white films, the titles are always in white, in horror they are always bold, and have a dripping effect, however the Mac we were working with gave us little to work with, so the closest font to the desired one, was a the font 'cracked'. By enlarging the fort to dominate the screen, finally gave us the feel our film craved, which is now much more suited to the genre of classic horror.
Inspired by
The establishing shot sets up the scene, and signifies to the audience what the film is about. A low angle shot of the front of the school is an anchorage of what the film is about. The low angle shot makes the school look haunted, and gives if an intimidating feel.
The school building is the perfect scene for our film genre of horror. The building is old and contains a Gothic quality's much like churches and, building you might imagine from classic Gothic literature. Even more so when we convert the colour to black and white. The low angle shot gives the building an important status, the building is portrayed as high and mighty. You might also believe and feel as though the building was a character in its self, and bares dark qualities like the beast. I personally would treat the building in this way, because it plays an important and significant role. The school engulfs the helpless girl, and also acts as a partner in the monsters gruesome crime. (This shot was used for the opening, which will also include the title sequence)
This shot was also on of our initial ideas, Which was also initially our favourite shot whilst filming, and we made a unanimous decision that this would be our establishing shot, however when we began to edit, we discovered another shot we experimented with, which was more suited to the role.
Even though we had made a decision already made, just to be on the safe side and to give our self a wide variety of establishing shots to use for our film, filming the back of the film also became an option. Although we had taken time to film this part of the school, however the external buildings didn't have a place in the mise en scene, if we had no other options then this would have been acceptable, how ever we have other options which we shall use.
Nick had an idea, which was to have a sequence of shots of the school, one after another as the title sequence rolled. However the initial idea made more sense to have one still shot of the exterior of the building where the crime and drama takes place. Hopefully if the weather co-operates there will be clouds in the sky, and we can speed it up using after effects, the use of this effect Will create a pathetic fallacy, which will signify to the audience what they might expect from he rest of the film, the pathetic fallacy is necessary at this moment in the film, because our project is to create the first two minutes of a film.
Moonrise has been a huge influence on my personal vision of the film, the idea for the use of pathetic fallacy came from Frank Borzage, If I could I would have used the use of shadows, however we don't have the lighting to create this effect.
Citizen Cane, to many is considered the most important film ever made. Looking at the film and for insparation and, extrapulated this important shot to help us with our own shots, storyboards and desired effects. This shot is particularly important because it had never been seen before in film, building the set on a stage to create this exiting new low angle shot. Luckily for us part of our opening sequence is filmed on an actual stage, which came in handy when creating our very own Citizen Kane low angle shot. Costume
Also in this freeze frame, as an audience you will notice the "damsel in distress" is sporting a white cardigan and white trainers, (she is a modern, damsel) this juxtaposes the black background. The contrast will signify to the audience, that this character is innocent and pure, and is vulnerable. The black backdrop portrays the setting as one of danger,of mystery and enigma. The black curtain acts almost as a huge shadow, which puts the audience at an unease, because the character is unaware of the danger she might be in. Everything in the mise en scene has been thought about in fine detail and, this scene is frame to create this desired mood. I suggested this part of the school especially for the mise en scene, i had my heart set on doing the genre of horror from the very first lesson. Which is why we have followed some basic rules of classic horror. Of course if we had the facilites to do so, it would be closer too a classic horror, however we worked with what we had, and so far we have been doing this well, now the success off the final piece will fall down to the quality of the editing.
This shot is framed like this to specifically out line the contrast between both characters, its an anchorage of the idea of good verse evil. The meanings of black and white signify to the audience who is who, what may happen and who's the goodie and who's the baddie. Black and white juxtapose each other, they are two different extermes of shades. If you notice, the trainers are both the same brand, and are typically worn by young teenagers, which signifys to the audience that her killer, is perhaps one of her peers, and someone she knows. which adds a more creepy feel to the shot, and effectively to the feel of the film. Which also reflects real life, which is more terrifying then any film made in history. With the underlineing issue of- you are more likely to be attacked/ killed by someone you know rather than a stranger, in the back of our minds, we always have a thought that we may have stared our possible muderer in the face, which brings that gut feeling and that is the feeling we were hopeing to capture in this frame.
This music has been choosen to create a build up of tension, also it tells the audience somethings about to happen, and will have them on edge. This non-diageticpiece of music will be perfect for the stair case scene, when the female character is being stalked by this mysterious other character. Or perhaps, the scene when the female enters the hall is and walking round the stage, looking for her friend. Either or, this music is most definitely perfect for our project!
Now our project is underway, and we have begun filiming, I have an idea of where this music may just be perfect. Once (I) the main charater leaves the dining hall to meet 'Oliver' and begins to mount the stairs, a single drop of water lands on (my/) her hand. This, may be the seliva or it could just be a drop of water from the roof on an old building. The moment this substance is noticed, we could try adding this peice of music, the moment it hits the hand, which is the moment the auidence is on edge, along with charater.
This is my favorite of the two classical pieces because, it tells a story and has a climax which our piece will have towards the end when the figure behind me disappears, and hopefully this music will flow, I'm going to carry on looking, but this music creates a definite horror genre which is exactly what were looking for, I'm going to share this with the rest of my group and hopefully they share my enthusiasm for this music, this is not the final music because we haven't finished filming yet, but its always good to have multiple ideas.
I believe that this would work well for our title sequence, it reminds me of classical horror and gives me that feeling of a full scence of security, which is later shattered by the series of events. The title sequence includes old classical painting of form er head masters of the school in which our film is set in, which works very well with the classical music, I will put forth my ideas to my group and together will decided weather or not this is a good idea.
Considering I have previously looked at this film to head me int he right direction, its only natural that i use it again to better my understanding of the task ahead, also my film we have unanimously decided its going to be in black and white will also give me more of a feel to what my film may look like. The non-diagetic sound, much like The shinning, also already sets the scene of a horror movie, its not subtle nor does it use juxtaposition, which i may consider in my own piece. The use of shadows creates a spooky feeling and un eases the audience because shadows naturally scare us as humans because you can't fully see the figure and reminds us of child hood fears. We also might want to use bad weather, to create pathetic fallacy so the audience also knows the tone of the film. Unlike The Shinning in the first minute we already know by the shots that someone has died, and we are starting to piece together what may happen in the film, its been set up completely different, which is helpful to me because now i can decide which i think is better. The baby crying is also a good touch, because the audience knows somethings wrong because the baby is un-easy, and sometimes we belive babys to have other senses.
Looking at classic successful horror films will give me a better understanding of what I have to do my self. This is the first two minutes of The Shining by Stanley Kubrick. The camera movements are slow and the non-diagetic sound already creates a huge sense of suspense and tension, already we know somethings going to happen and that this is a horror film. I is in the middle of no where in a huge spooky looking house, not much has been given away yet, which I need to bare in mind when shooting my piece. The beginning credits appear trough the scenes, which is done well although we don't have the equipment to do such shots, its useful to have this clip because it is a perfect example, and is along the lines of what i have to do.

Using a typical over the shoulder shot, which can be found in films and most commonly in products such as soaps or series, using a popular teen drama to do our research and apply it to our own piece, this is a clip from skins:
[insert clip here]
From observing the editing in this over the shoulder reverse shot, we had a visual indication on what we had to do, which was a huge help, when it came to editing the conversation between each character. The reason for this was because it was a similar set up, one character coming into the room sitting down opposite a character already present, and then engaging in intimate conversation.
* holding a shot steady, where appropriate;
-Each shot is held steady, no shaky shots.(not much more to say)
*framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate;
-The stair shots each include the stairs and the body of the character no un-necessary items or factors, for the set up of the scene that was about to happen, which was set by the teacher.
-The conversation with the over the shoulder shots, they are framed well capturing the emotions of the characters, and including the shoulder of the other character to add to the conversation.
*using a variety of shot distances as appropriate
-good use of mid shots, to establish a conversation, and close up to their faces for emotions and reactions to the dialogue and the situation. Low and high angle shots to see the character running down each stair case.
*shooting material appropriate to the task set;
-the piece was about bunking, which is set a school, and they included a character coming into a room, siting down with another character who was already present in the room engaging in a conversation using various shots, which we executed well I think.
*selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting;
-the lighting behind the boys head, tells the audience that he is the innocent participant in the actual bunking and there is no light shining behind my head which indicates that the girl is influencing him to bunk. objects such as the tables and desks in the class room are completely appropriate because they hiding in a class room in a school from teachers, it sets up the scene of an average secondary/ sixth form school. and perfect for the project set.
each scene is light daytime, which is relevant because school is during the day making the scene believable.
*editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer;
- the editing of the stair scene is short, not to long so the viewer is still interested by the time she reaches the class room, but you can still see her running through the window which is a nice little touch because it moves smoothly into the next scene, always keeping the audience interested in whats happening, the quick cuts portray a scene of urgency which works along side the acting and head movements of the character.
-the over the shoulder reverse shots are edited in this way to introduce the male character with a close up and show the importance of the contrasting facial expressions of each character, then the mid shot at the end leaves the audience wanting more on what happens next, also revealing the body language and slight change in proximity between the characters, when she moves away from him realising that he id not fully "down" with what they are doing.
*using varied shot transitions and other effects selectively and appropriately for the task set;
-the task set required no special effects or transitions, because the piece is on continuity therefore the absence is completely appropriate.
*using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;
-The editing was mostly spot on, it flowed and well and each sound in the piece is appropriate. The use of dialogue following a small simple script.
*using titles appropriately.
-this was done well, the titles tell the audience what the piece is about, the story line, that continuity was the aim, also who was involved in the project.
We were given a stimuli, for our first simple continuity piece, which was the concept of a somebody walking into a room, and in this room somebody was already presant sitting down, and then to include a conversation between the two charaters. Separetly we all made out individual story board and brought them together once finished to share and discuss ideas with the group. After discussing each subject we decided to go with Nicholas's idea of a student entering a room int he school, and having a conversation with his/her peer. This idea was the most simple and the easiest to apply to a peice of drama, considering we already have a school and class rooms at our disposal, so the piece would be simply realistic.
[insert story board]
Using our resraech into The Line of action we drew out a camera plan, which includes a birds eye view of the set, and diagrams of where the cameras will be placed in order to create the desired shots.
[insert camera plan]
Lastly we put together a simple script, of a boy and a girl bunking and when they meet eacother they engage in conversation:
Femi: Oh my god i though you were a teacher.
Nina: (Out of breath) I almost got caught by Mr.Wilson.
Femi: We should have just stayed in class.
Nina: No this is jokes, lessons are boring.
Even though this script was simple, and not exactly amazing, it was effective because it got the job done alowing us to film all the footage we needed, on our next piece will will focus in on these factors, however it was not an issue becuase our piece included everthing needed.
In order to create a successful continuity piece, we had to under go a number of step to learn how to walk before we can run! Firstly, the research into setting up a simple scene. Our teacher had taught us about the line of action, which is a strategy used by filmmakers which is the most basic rule of camera placement. The purpose of the line of action preserves constant screen direction and space, it gives the film crew a clear plan of where to place the cameras and which shoots to take.
A line is established ^, as seen int his diagram. You are left with a space of 180 degree in which you place your camreas, once the line and the 180 degree working space is clear this is where you place your cameras, and cameras are never placed outside this zone.
Using these rules we were able to shoot a converstaion, incudeing over the shoulder reverse shots, and a mid shot and edited it together to create a perfect conversation, which we were pretty proud of, it felt good once the plan on paper had come together visually.
